Government & Regulations

The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is responsible for public electrical safety in Ontario as designated by Ontario Regulation 89/99, and is responsible for enforcing the Electricity Act and Regulations, including the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, Ontario Regulation 164/99.

ESA produces amendments to the Ontario Regulation for provincial government approval every four years, and maintains participation on a number of Canadian and national committees to identify electrical safety standards and requirements that should be incorporated into the Code in response to accident reports and changing technology.

In addition, ESA is responsible for identifying and developing proposals for new regulations to keep the Ontario public safe from potential electrical shock and fire hazards. This includes all preparatory work to support proposals and involves detailed stakeholder consultations.
