What are unsafe products?
Unsafe products are defined as:

  • Unapproved products
  • Counterfeit products or products with counterfeit labels
  • Certified products that have identified safety issues

What are the approval requirements for electrical products?

  • The Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and Ontario Regulation 438/07 require that all electrical products (including equipment) be approved.
  • The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) recognizes certification bodies and field evaluation agencies accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to certify or evaluate electrical products or devices. 
  • Only electrical products bearing a recognized mark or label are deemed approved. Click here to view recognized marks or labels

What are the requirements regarding the display, sale, or use of electrical products?
Ontario Regulation 438/07 and the OESC Rule 2-022 state that :

  • No person shall use, advertise, display, sell, offer for sale, or other disposal any electrical product (equipment) unless it has been approved in accordance with Ontario Regulation 438/07.

How to report unsafe electrical products.

  1. Call ESA at 1-877-ESA-SAFE (1-877-372-7233) between 7:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; or
  2. Complete the following form on-line and submit electronically.
