Electrical Safety Plan

Good Safety is Good Business – Implementing an Electrical Safety Plan

At least one electrical tradesperson has died each year from an electrical incident in the past 15 years. And In the last 10 years, 25 per cent of electrical-related fatalities at work involved workers in the electrical trades. These incidents often involved unsafe work practices.

These tragedies are devastating for workers and their families. The implications for your company can also be severe – disruption of operations, investigations, fines, lawsuits, criminal charges and lost productivity. Putting safety first is the right thing to do for your employees, contractors and your business.

CSA Standard Z462 helps companies bridge the gap between the requirements of Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) regulations and their real-world application. The standard requires a documented electrical safety plan that includes:

  • Identifying and assessing equipment and task related hazards
  • Establishing safe work procedures based on identified hazards
  • Required personal protective equipment and protective clothing

ESA encourages all businesses to have an electrical safety plan. Employers can reference a number of standards including CSA Z462, “Workplace Electrical Safety”, in order to develop the right program for their business.
